Abstract

Feeder flow control (FFC) can be employed in microgrids to mitigate the power flow volatility experienced by the grid feeder connected to distributed energy resources (DERs) and loads that comprise the microgrid. FFC algorithm presented in earlier work based on power-vs-frequency droop concepts exhibits some shortcomings during islanded operation, resulting in degraded power sharing among multiple distributed generators connected to the microgrid. A modified FFC algorithm is presented that overcomes this limitation, significantly improving the power sharing among multiple microsources connected to the microgrid feeder. An extension of this modified FFC algorithm to a distributed power flow architecture with multiple FFC units that share the required regulation power is also described. Both simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the key performance improvements that are achieved using the modified feeder flow control algorithm.
